Assembled from and inspired by found materials, Anderson Borba’s work dislocates and unfolds the physical body in a challenge to the classical sculpture canon.  Owing as much to those works as the self-taught carvers of his native Brazil, he chisels, chips, and burns away at fragmented wooden skeletons, often decorated with cardboard, fabric, and even pages from old lifestyle magazines among other things.  The results are seductive—chapped and derelict, but also masterfully crafted abstractions of the human form.

Anderson was born in Santos, Brazil.  He now lives and works in London where he recently earned an MFA from the UCL Slade School of Fine Art.  

In 2020 he received the Herbert Seaborn Memorial Scholarship and the Gilbert Bayles Scholarship.  His latest solo exhibition, I’ve seen one of these, was hosted at Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel’s São Paulo gallery, Galpão, and he has also exhibited recently at Art Basel Miami Beach, Paris+ par Art Basel, Kupfer in London, and Casa da Cultura in Comporta, Portugal.
